IRAS form guidance

The following is advice and some standard answers for researchers applying for Queen Mary or Barts Health Sponsorship.

Project Filter

The main body of the IRAS form is created from the answers you give to the Project Filter questions.

It is therefore essential that these questions are answered accurately. Incorrect answers will create irrelevant questions that are not applicable to your study or will deactivate questions that are required.

Question 2 of the Project Filter asks you to categorise your study. If you are unsure how your study should be classified (or indeed how to answer any other Project Filter question) please read the question specific guidance available and/or contact the JRMO research governance team

General IRAS form Top Tips

  • E-learning provides clear instructions for new users.
  • Ensure consistency across all documents (IRAS, Protocol, PIS etc.). Vitally important that all details such as Protocol version and date, inclusion and exclusion criteria, samples size, study interventions etc. are consistent across documents.
  • Do not just copy and paste from the Protocol or other documents. The IRAS form needs to be completed in lay language.
  • Be very clear:
    • Who will make the first to approach participants and how potential participants will be identified.
    • Who will access data, where it is transferred to and from and how it will be stored.
    • What insurance/indemnity is in place for the study and for any equipment used.
    • What is being done to protect intellectual property, where applicable.
  • Ensure all sites (including unconfirmed potential sites) are listed in Part C.
  • Justify in full any change in standard clinical care or any additional invasive intervention proposed.
